Improved ex situ conservation for plants: Applying zoo population management tools to rare plant species in ex situ collections

Pourquoi assister à cette session?
Discuss potential limitations in our current management of genetic diversity in ex situ collections. Learn how we can adopt tools and protocols developed by the zoological community to maintain ex situ genetic diversity of threatened plant species.
HideDescription
In our two-person speaker pitch we showcase how the tools and protocols used to conserve animals across zoos can be applied to the ex situ conservation of threatened, exceptional plant species (species from which seed cannot be collected or for which seeds cannot be adequately preserved) curated across multiple botanic gardens. We demonstrate how it is greatly improving ex situ conservation practices of the Critically Endangered (Possibly Extinct in the Wild) Hawaiian endemic plant species, Brighamia insignis, as a proof of concept. We hope our session builds impetus for more widespread implementation, and increased collaboration in general, within the global plant conservation community.
